Respect 1. consideration: respect for my feelings 2. an attitude of deference or esteem 3. the state of being honoured or esteemed
In addition to my open call to Project 7 collaborators to respond to this months value. I specifically asked collaborator Emma Adams for a one word / image response to RESPECT. This is what I received:
Emma writes: I sat down in one sitting (I hope that counts as a 'one' thing) and wrote this on one page:
I'm going to fill a page with people I respect:
Tony Benn - possible saviour of the universe, if the universe would just shut up and bloody well listen
Rosa Luxumbourg - Murdered Marxist revolutionary genius. Lenin ignored her good advice and look where that got the soviet's. Stalin that's what. Enough said.
The suffragists and suffragettes - lets not split hairs. There are many ways to skin a cat.
The Super Furry Animals - A proper genius band. I could be tempted back into the closet by the rather wonderful Gruff Rhys. I'm not sure that's a respectful comment. I was thinking about his brain. But still it's objectification and so not ideal. When thinking about respect. Ideally.
The men who built the Leeds Liverpool canal. No not the architects and designers - I am sure they were excellent, but I mean the men who dug a hole through the rock of the bloody Pennines with their bare hands.
Jane Austin - a little lady writing her little books, surprisingly good.
Charlotte Bronte - much the same, really awfully well done
George Elliot - I'm sensing a pattern
Jeanette Winterson - So, writing well seems to be something ladies can do when they're not giving birth or cooking the dinner. Lovely.
Stevie Wonder - he can be forgiven the rubbish songs because Superstition is so good.
Did I mention Tony Benn?
David Attenborough - lovely man and he knows a ton about animals doesn't he. He also had a mini zoo in his house and allowed marmosets to live on the curtains in his living room. This was a chore because they like to cover their tiny hands in their own urine and spread it around. He lived with that! For the good of the animals!! How can we not respect him?
Simone Lia - comic maker and genius. It has to be said, when I saw her at a comic fair she was a bit disappointing in real life. Kind of disengaged and a bit not bothered. Which fans don't warm to do they. BUT she made Fluffy which is one of my favourite comics of all time. Ever. So I respect her for that.
Rutu Modan - comic book maker and genius. Exit Wounds.
Caryl Churchill - Playwright - Creator of the bar known as 'try to be as good as this one day'.
Those in the Occupy movement, occupying places right now. Thank you.
Those Amnesty International members who get their shit together and write letters and emails regularly. Thank you.
Those in Green Peace taking direct action right now. Thank you.
The Glasgow Boys - painters and sculptors from Glasgow. Family connection (to E A Walton my Mum's great Uncle) perhaps I'm confusing a romantic pride with respect. BTW there were some 'girls' in the movement too… Check Constance Walton's work out. Amazing. But they don't get so much attention…
Emily Dickinson - poet genius, wrote in total obscurity, bionic determination. Didn't need acclaim or people saying 'you're awfully good Emily, keep going love' which is a humbling lesson.
Desmond Tutu. He came to Bradford when I was a kid and he is lovely and if all Christians were like him I'd be one.
Karen Carpenter - she's dead now. She had a tragic life starving herself. Even so, she sang like everything is / was beautiful. I thank her and respect her for that.
